In the first movie, we heard a whispered tale of John Wick murdering a man with a pencil. like there's no 'precise' way to mow someone down with your mustang. John sits at his desk with a pencil in hand, a pad of paper before him, thinking. I guess the other problem is that's the big driving setpiece, and I just don't think the cool, tactical character of john wick translates super well into that realm. but I can see how this would read as an odd character arc if you're considering it more atomically from the first (which I just re-watched last night) Perkins kills Harry, 'John Wick' (2014) Clarke Peters as Harry in 'John Wick.' Lionsgate. and then he has a chance to reset when we see him burying the stash again, before diving back in with clear eyes for the main act. so his actions weren't uncharacteristic, they were just influenced by recent (offscreen) events. like, my impression was this picks up minutes/hours after the first one ended. I laughed my ass off at Jonathan and Common side sniping at each other in the Subway terminal. The lead up to the sister dying definitely dragged a bit but otherwise felt like there wasn't a minute wasted. And the "everybody's in on this assassin conspiracy world" humor wore a little thin by the end of the movie for sure. I do worry a bit though about how much mythology will be required in the third one to reach any kind of satisfying conclusion plot-wise. The John Wick goes shopping and 7 million dollar contract sequences were rad as hell. Unsurprisingly this isn't as tight or as lean and it does way too much plotwise these movies don't lend themselves to excess the way, say, fast and furious films do Toggle Spoiler Laserblast wrote: what makes the original a perfect movie is the smallness of the world it inhabits and the characters it builds therein ![]()
